The perfect weekend getaway just outside Jozi.
In 1896 the marvelous body of water near the Magaliesberg called the Hartbeespoort dam, was built. It’s about 100km from the busy city of Johannesburg and it’s excellent for a weekend getaway or a 24-hour vacation. The family-friendly activities and scenery vary from the beautiful dam, aerial cableway, animals and wildlife and watersports for the more adventurous people.
After stopping by the dam and taking loads of photos, next on my Harties must-do list is the Hartbeespoort Dam Snake & Animal Park and the Chameleon Village.
The Hartbeespoort Dam Snake & Animal Park is situated on the eastern side of the dam and is about 56 years old. While walking through this prestigious zoo you can feel close to nature looking at exotic cats and reptiles while hearing the water splash and boats sailing near the jetties.
The park also offers ferry rides on weekends so be sure to book your ride or check out the Harties Watersport Centre for speedboat and Jet Ski rides. I don’t approve of animals being kept in cages but this park keeps the enclosures in immaculate condition and all of the animals looks happy and well fed so it’s definitely worth a visit.
Remember to stop by the Chameleon Village for a quick lunch or an adventurous few minutes on a drift trike. This place will keep your family busy for a whole day with its shops, markets and crafts stalls, four restaurants, go-karts, drift trikes, paintball and their own snake and reptile park. You can enjoy a bit of Mozambique at one of their restaurants which offer Portuguese cuisine, yummy Tipo Tinto R&R’s and 2M beers.
Hartbeespoort Dam promises fun for the whole family and you will want to come back to this scenic area jam-packed with activities.
